Perhaps the highest priority of STEM education is the ability for future generations to update and redesign our current tools. So it is now that we take the Internet to the next level in interconnectivity with the implementation of microprocessors in everyday objects- ensuring constant connection and instant data exchange through wireless technologies. This proposed network is known as the Internet of Things.
What is the Internet of Things?
Simply put, the Internet of Things is the concept of equipping any device with a microprocessor and Internet capability, essentially giving these devices an on and off switch to the Internet and also to each other. Author Jacob Morgan writes in his article for Forbes, ‘The IoT is a giant network of connected ‘things’ (which also includes people). ‘¯The relationship will be between people-people, people-things, and things-things’ (Morgan 2014).
How is the Internet of Things Possible?
The Internet of Things is possible due to the concept of pervasive computing- a growing trend in the world of technology- embracing networking and interconnectivity. The most prominent pervasive computing devices are the ever-growing and ever-evolving smart technologies such as smart phones, smart watches, smart televisions, and the list goes on and on all the way up to fully-automated smart homes.
